ZOA's Integrity Framework: from theory to practice

In January 2020, ZOA introduced ZOA’s Integrity Framework. An comprehensive tool that enables all ZOA staff – as well as others acting on behalf of ZOA, such as consultants and implementing partners – to comply to our standards.

Integrity Framework bases on cored values

We value people, we are faithful, we are good stewards and we serve with integrity

As an organisation, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity in all our activities. That’s why we invested in the development of an Integrity Framework. In 2020, despite the difficult circumstances, we keep focusing on training of staff and communication about the revised standards.

The Integrity Framework is based on ZOA’s core values: we value people, we are faithful, we are good stewards and we serve with integrity. We seek to apply these value commitments in the interaction with all our stakeholders, including beneficiaries, partners, donors, and colleagues. Although cultures and values differ considerably between countries, we expect our value commitments to be applied by all those representing ZOA in all countries where we are active. That is why we invest in (online) training of our staff on the content and application of the Integrity Framework.

Sandra Vogd is HR Advisor and Integrity Coordinator: ''In June, we offered an online, interactive course to all Integrity Coordinators and Focal Points. It is very encouraging that people are motivated to take up this new important role. This is a new role in a relatively new system, the Integrity Framework. Therefore, awareness raising amongst colleagues and beneficiaries is ongoing and needed.

The three pillars of ZOA’s Integrity Framework

Pillar one: Integrity Standards and Norms. ZOA’s Code of Conduct outlines the standard of behaviour ZOA seeks to promote within the organisation and in the interaction with its stakeholders. The Code of Conduct applies to all contracted staff, volunteers, consultants, and others acting on behalf of ZOA. ZOA is convinced that all staff should be an ambassador for the organisation and the values it stands for. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all staff to adhere to this Code at all times.

Pillar two: Reporting Complaints. How to report a complaint? ZOA aims to provide a fair, safe and ethically sound working environment to all its staff. The same applies for beneficiaries, partner organisations and other stakeholders ZOA works with. As part of that safe working environment, ZOA encourages staff, beneficiaries and others to come forward with complaints in case they have a concern or negative experience in working with or within ZOA.

Pillar three: Complaints procedure. What happens after a complaint or grievance is filed? ZOA follows a standardized procedure each time after a complaint or grievance is filed. In this way, ZOA aims to ensure equal and fair responses to all complainants.

Focus on training and communication

All ZOA staff – as well as others acting on behalf of ZOA – sign for compliance to these standards. But this subject requires our constant attention. The behavioural standards and confidential options for staff and beneficiaries to report suspected breaches of those standards have to be well known. The current focus on training and communication in ZOA’s Integrity Framework – and the development of supportive materials and tools – addresses this need.
